Which free coding platform is right for you?
There are more than 20 great places to learn to code for free, and that is the problem: too many to choose from. Answer four quick questions and get a shortlist matched to your goal, budget, experience, and preferred language.
The short version: if you want a structured path and total beginner support, start with freeCodeCamp or The Odin Project. For interactive practice, try Scrimba or Codecademy. For AI and machine learning, go to DeepLearning.AI, Hugging Face, or fast.ai. The quiz below tailors this to your exact answers.
Pick what you want to build to see your matches. Every platform we list is free to start.
How the match is decided
- Your goal is the main signal. We tag every platform with what it teaches well (front-end, backend, data, machine learning, mobile, security, cloud) and match on that first.
- Language nudges the ranking toward platforms strong in what you want to write, whether that is JavaScript, Python, Swift, Go, C#, or SQL.
- Experience decides between gentle on-ramps (Khan Academy, CS50, freeCodeCamp) and deeper material for people who already code (MIT OpenCourseWare, fast.ai, Karpathy's lectures).
- Budget controls how we treat free-first platforms that have a paid tier. Pick "Free only" and the platforms that stay free end to end rise to the top.
Frequently asked questions
How does the platform quiz work?
You pick your goal (front-end, data, machine learning, and so on), a language you lean toward, your starting level, and your budget. The tool scores all of our free-first platforms against those answers and shows the one to three that fit best. It runs entirely in your browser, with no signup and no data sent anywhere.
Are these platforms actually free?
Yes. Every platform in the quiz is free to start. Some, like freeCodeCamp, The Odin Project, Khan Academy, and MIT OpenCourseWare, are free all the way through. Others, like Coursera, Codecademy, and Boot.dev, are free-first with an optional paid tier. If you choose "Free only," the free-all-the-way platforms rank higher.
What if I do not have a goal yet?
Start with the goal that sounds closest and see what comes up. If you are a total beginner who just wants to try coding, pick "Front-end / websites" or "Computer science basics" and choose "Brand new to code." freeCodeCamp, The Odin Project, and Harvard CS50 tend to top that mix.
Can I get a certificate?
Some of these platforms offer free or paid certificates. Recommendation cards flag the ones with certificates so you can spot them. freeCodeCamp certifications are free; Coursera and edX let you audit for free and pay only if you want the certificate.
Do I have to pick just one platform?
No. Most people mix two or three. The quiz gives you a shortlist so you are not starting from 22 options. A common path is one structured curriculum (like The Odin Project) plus one interactive platform (like Scrimba or Codecademy) for practice.
